For self-awareness, we have to understand ourselves, our emotions, and be able to understand other people's feelings but also to be able to have empathy and to respond to other peoples emotions.

You have to teach first what empathy is; you can't confuse it with sympathy. The best way would be to put them via role playing in other people's point of view. Teach them to observe others, listen first, and open up to people. Empathy is a 2-way communication.
